Community members and organizations invited to gather Sunday outside Delaney Hall to remember those who have died and call for dignity and accountability
NEWARK, NJ — The Latino Action Network (LAN) will hold a solemn candlelight vigil on Sunday, October 11, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. outside Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, to remember individuals who have died in ICE custody, following their release from detention, or in connection with immigration enforcement operations.
During the vigil, participants will read aloud the names of individuals whose lives have been lost within or impacted by the nation’s immigration detention and enforcement system. The reading will include individuals connected to Delaney Hall, the ICE detention facility in Newark that has become a major focus of immigrant-rights advocacy in New Jersey.
“This vigil is about ensuring that the people we have lost are remembered as human beings—not simply as numbers in a detention system,” said Javier Robles, President of the Latino Action Network. “Every name represents a person, a family, and a community that has experienced an unimaginable loss. We will say their names, honor their lives, and continue demanding a system that respects human dignity and fundamental rights.”
“Behind every name we read is a life that mattered—a parent, a child, a sibling, a friend, and a member of a community,” said Maria Andrade, Executive Vice President of the Latino Action Network. “We gather in remembrance, but also with a responsibility to demand dignity and accountability. No family should have to wonder whether their loved one will receive basic medical care, humane treatment, or simply make it home alive. On Sunday, we will stand together, say their names, and make clear that they will not be forgotten.”
LAN is inviting families, faith communities, immigrant-rights organizations, civil-rights organizations, labor organizations, elected officials, advocates, students, and community members from throughout New Jersey to join the vigil and stand together in remembrance.
Participants are encouraged to bring signs honoring and remembering those whose lives have been lost. Candles will be provided by the Latino Action Network.
The vigil comes amid continuing concerns from immigrant-rights and civil-rights advocates regarding conditions in immigration detention facilities, access to medical care, due process, family separation, and the human consequences of immigration detention and enforcement.
The gathering will also provide an opportunity for New Jerseyans to stand in solidarity with immigrant families and affirm that every person—regardless of immigration status or country of origin—deserves dignity, due process, appropriate medical care, and humane treatment.
